Why does my enitre Mac crash on Yosemite?

symptoms:
  • crash of the entire Mac
  • flickering of the screen
  • only mouse courser in moving (no reaction)

reason:
The reason for the problem is a bug in the graphics driver of Mac OS X 10.10 when switching from integrated graphics (e.g. Intel HD 4000) to decrete graphics (e.g. NVidia).

solution:
A Preliminary solution for the issue is to stop the driver from switching due to a setting in the enegery option. Set it to "high".

Alternativily you can also you a tool named gfxCardStatus to have more control over the switching task.
